Chapter Six

Gabriel had been acting like a love-struck puppy all day.

It all started when he’d left Lysander’s arms that morning, doing his own version of a walk of shame toward the yacht. It didn’t help matters at all when, on the way to his room, Addison had caught sight of him and wolf-whistled. Gabriel swore he was going to die of embarrassment right at that very moment, but he kept his head held high and his dignity in check.

“You go, girl!” Addison shouted, emphasizing that last word with a roll of his R’s and a couple of snaps. “Walk-of-shame yourself back to that room!”

This, of course, led to many people peeking out and seeing Gabriel with the same clothes he wore last night, albeit rumpled and disheveled, especially since he was being serviced—well, no, that seemed a bit too professional—by his newfound lover.

Lysander. The name made Gabriel’s knees weak just hearing it.

There was a whole lot more squealing and definitely a whole lot more staring into thin air as he remembered the feeling of Lysander’s lips, his hands, and his body. He hadn’t even realized he was too deep in his reverie when Lysander approached him from behind to suddenly hug him. When he got pulled out of his thoughts, however, he remembered the radiant expression on Lysander’s face so vividly.

The feeling of warmth that wrapped around him as he walked through the town square, passing by the forge, was something that he hadn’t ever been accustomed to. He wasn’t the type of guy that inspired romantic gestures from others, after all. In fact, Gabriel first thought he was getting kidnapped, and he thought about struggling for just the briefest moment, when he’d heard that voice, like a calming caress, waft over his body.

“Hello, erastes,” Lysander said as he approached Gabriel from behind. Without even saying a word, the man wrapped his arms around Gabriel’s body and drew him back against his chest. Not that he was doing anything important, just some people-watching, so his attention was immediately diverted toward his man.

“I need to show you something,” Lysander added.

“Oh? What is it?” Gabriel’s head tilted. He adjusted his spectacles.

Lysander grinned. “You will have to promise to see me tonight, Gabriel, to see what it is. But…I promise that no matter what happens, I won’t let anything happen to you. I will protect you. Just as long as you say yes.”

“Why do you say that? Will anything happen?” Gabriel asked, his expression turning into one of bemusement. “But…no matter how silly it is, I do think I can trust you.”

“No. I just felt it necessary to tell you anyway.” Lysander pressed a kiss to his cheek and then walked off. “I’ll see you at the springs tonight, erastes.”

No matter how odd the man’s question was, Gabriel couldn’t help but feel a bubbling feeling of excitement inside him. He’d been staring, goofy-eyed, at nothing all day, even when he’d been collating data from all of the gathering his team had done.

Even in front of the stacks of papers, he couldn’t concentrate, and he loved to work with data.
